This quick classic eggnog with fresh nutmeg takes five minutes, tastes like a holiday memory, and uses real ingredients you probably already have. No cooking, no fuss, just that velvety, aromatic cup you’ll come back to year after year.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large egg yolks (room temperature)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 whole nutmeg (for grating fresh)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons bourbon, rum, or brandy

Instructions

  1. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together in a medium bowl for about 1 minute until pale yellow and thickened.
  2. Slowly pour in the whole milk and heavy cream while whisking constantly until fully combined (about 30 seconds).
  3. Stir in the vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and a tiny pinch of salt.
  4. Grate about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of fresh nutmeg directly into the bowl and whisk gently.
  5. Optional: Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a pitcher for the smoothest texture.
  6. Taste and adjust sweetness or nutmeg as desired. If adding alcohol, stir in 2 tablespoons of bourbon, rum, or brandy.
  7. Serve immediately over ice or chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to let flavors meld.

Notes

Fresh nutmeg is the star—pre-ground nutmeg won’t give the same vibrant flavor. Room temperature eggs whisk up smoother. Don’t skip the salt; it enhances sweetness and rounds out the spices. For a safer version, use pasteurized eggs or gently heat the egg yolks and sugar in a double boiler to 160°F before adding milk and cream. The flavors improve after a few hours in the fridge.
