A quick and easy patriotic trifle featuring layers of fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, whipped cream, and pound cake. Perfect for 4th of July celebrations and summer gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 store-bought pound cake or angel food cake (about 12 oz / 340 g), cut into 1-inch cubes
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon fruit liqueur or berry syrup for drizzling
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced (about 150 g)
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries (about 150 g)
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries (about 120 g)
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon sugar or honey (if berries are tart)
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream (480 ml), cold
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (30 g), sifted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Chill your mixing bowl and beaters in the fridge for about 15 minutes before whipping.
  2. Pour the cold heavy cream into the bowl and start whipping on medium speed.
  3. When it starts to thicken, add powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
  4. Whip until soft peaks form, about 5-7 minutes, being careful not to overwhip.
  5. Rinse the strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries under cold water.
  6. Hull and slice the strawberries into thin pieces, leaving the blueberries and raspberries whole.
  7. If berries are tart, toss them gently with a tablespoon of sugar or honey and let sit for 10 minutes to macerate.
  8. Slice the pound cake or angel food cake into 1-inch cubes.
  9. Optionally drizzle the cake cubes lightly with fruit liqueur or berry syrup.
  10. In a trifle bowl, place a layer of cake cubes (about 1/3 of the cake).
  11. Add a layer of strawberries, spreading evenly.
  12. Spoon a generous layer of whipped cream over the strawberries and smooth gently.
  13. Repeat layering with blueberries, whipped cream, raspberries, and finish with remaining whipped cream on top.
  14. Cover the trifle with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  15. Before serving, garnish with a few extra fresh berries on top.

Notes

Chill mixing bowl and beaters before whipping cream for best results. Use fresh berries for best texture. Layer berries separately to keep colors vibrant. Chill trifle for at least 2 hours to let flavors meld. Re-whip cream gently if it deflates during layering. For dairy-free, substitute coconut cream. For gluten-free, use gluten-free cake.
