This warm and aromatic mulled cider features dried oranges and cinnamon sticks for a rich, concentrated citrus flavor. It’s quick to make on the stovetop or in a slow cooker, perfect for fall and winter gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large oranges, washed and sliced into ¼-inch rounds
  • Optional: light sprinkle of cinnamon sugar for drying
  • 8 cups (64 ounces) apple cider
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves (about 20–25 cloves)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (or honey, brown sugar, or agave)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 2 star anise pods (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 200°F (93°C). Wash and slice oranges into ¼-inch rounds. Arrange in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 2.5 to 3 hours, flipping halfway, until dry and leathery but not brittle. Let cool.
  2. In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine apple cider, dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise (if using), and a pinch of salt. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  3. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. For slow cooker, transfer to slow cooker and cook on low for 2 to 3 hours.
  4. Remove pot from heat. Stir in maple syrup and vanilla extract. Taste and adjust sweetness if desired.
  5. Strain cider through a fine-mesh strainer into a heatproof bowl or serving pot. Discard solids. Ladle into mugs and garnish with fresh cinnamon sticks or apple slices if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

Dried oranges are key for concentrated flavor. Do not boil the cider to avoid bitterness. Strain twice for a clear drink if serving guests. Dried oranges can be made in bulk and stored in an airtight container for weeks. For a spiked version, add bourbon, dark rum, or brandy to each mug.
