These cozy double chocolate chip pumpkin muffins are tender, moist, and dotted with melted pockets of chocolate. They taste like fall in the best way — warm spices, rich chocolate, and that unmistakable pumpkin flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (100g) light brown sugar, packed
  • ⅓ cup (30g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup (240g) pumpkin puree (100% pure pumpkin)
  • ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup (60ml) milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (175g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup (45g) extra chocolate chips (for topping)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line your muffin tin with paper liners or grease the cups well.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, salt, pumpkin pie spice, and cinnamon until evenly distributed.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs until light and frothy. Add the pumpkin puree, vegetable oil, milk, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth and fully combined.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Use a rubber spatula to fold together gently until just combined (a few lumps are fine). Do not overmix.
  5. Fold in 1 cup of chocolate chips with just a few strokes.
  6. Divide the batter evenly among the 12 muffin cups, filling each about ¾ full. Sprinkle the reserved chocolate chips and coarse sugar on top.
  7. Bake for 18-22 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through. Muffins are done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  8. Cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Don’t overmix the batter. Use room temperature ingredients. Measure flour correctly by spooning and leveling. Let muffins cool completely before storing. For best results, use a kitchen scale. Dark-colored pans may require shorter baking time.
