This cozy Christmas simmer pot with orange and cloves is the easiest way to make your home smell festive and inviting. With simple ingredients like oranges, cranberries, and cinnamon, it creates a natural, chemical-free holiday scent that fills your entire house with warmth and cheer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium oranges, sliced into rounds
  • 1 cup fresh cranberries
  • 3–4 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 tablespoons whole cloves
  • 3–4 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 2–3 whole star anise pods (optional)
  • Water, enough to cover ingredients

Instructions

  1. Wash the oranges well and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Do not peel them.
  2. Place the orange slices, fresh cranberries, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, rosemary sprigs, and star anise (if using) into a large pot or Dutch oven.
  3. Pour in enough cold water to just cover all the ingredients. Add the vanilla extract if using, and stir gently to combine.
  4. Place the pot on the stove over medium-high heat and bring to a gentle simmer. As soon as small bubbles appear, reduce the heat to low to maintain a very gentle simmer.
  5. Let the pot simmer gently. The scent will begin to fill your kitchen within 10-15 minutes and spread throughout your home within an hour.
  6. Check the water level every 30-45 minutes and add hot water from a kettle as needed to keep the ingredients submerged. Never let the pot run dry.
  7. After 4-5 hours, the ingredients will have released most of their scent. You can strain out the old ingredients and start fresh, or add a few new orange slices and a fresh cinnamon stick to revive the pot.
  8. Enjoy the natural, festive aroma as it fills your home. Keep the lid off to allow the steam to escape and scent the air.

Notes

Start with cold water and bring to a simmer slowly for best oil release. Keep the lid off to allow steam to escape. Never let the pot boil or run dry. For a slow cooker version, add all ingredients, cover with water, set on low, and keep lid cracked. The scent evolves over time: bright citrus first, then spices deepen after an hour, becoming more complex after 2-3 hours. This is a natural, chemical-free alternative to candles and air fresheners.
