A simple and comforting slow cooker apple butter recipe that transforms everyday apples into a silky, sweet, and spiced spread perfect for cozy mornings and gifts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups peeled and chopped apples (mix of tart and sweet varieties like Granny Smith and Fuji or Honeycrisp)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and chop about 6 cups of apples into roughly 1-inch pieces. Toss the chopped fruit into the slow cooker.
  2. Sprinkle 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup packed brown sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg over the apples. Stir gently to coat evenly.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice and 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract. Stir to combine.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours. Halfway through, stir gently to prevent sticking and encourage even cooking.
  5. After 6 hours, check the texture. If too watery, cook uncovered for the last hour. For a smoother texture, puree with an immersion blender or regular blender as desired.
  6. Let the apple butter cool completely before transferring to sterilized jars or airtight containers. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Notes

If the mixture sticks or burns, add a splash of water or apple cider vinegar to loosen it. You can substitute some sugar with maple syrup or add a dash of ginger for extra spice. Frozen apples can be used in a pinch but fresh apples provide the best flavor. Apple butter freezes well for up to 3 months. Flavors deepen after a day or two in the fridge.
