These healthy air fryer chickpeas are a quick, crispy, and flavorful snack made with pantry staples. Perfect for snacking, salad toppers, or lunchboxes, they’re naturally gluten-free, vegan, and endlessly customizable.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed, or 1 1/2 cups cooked chickpeas
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Optional: Lemon zest, for finishing
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
  • Optional: Dried thyme, oregano, or rosemary

Instructions

  1. Drain and rinse chickpeas thoroughly under cold water. If using canned, use a colander. Pat chickpeas very dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
  2. Lay chickpeas on a towel and gently rub to remove excess moisture and loosen some skins if desired. Let air dry for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Add chickpeas to a medium mixing bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, cumin, and black pepper. Toss until evenly coated.
  4. Preheat air fryer to 400°F for 3-5 minutes (if your model requires preheating).
  5. Add chickpeas to the air fryer basket in a single, even layer. Air fry at 400°F for 12–15 minutes, shaking the basket every 5 minutes for even crisping.
  6. Remove chickpeas from the air fryer and spread on a plate or baking sheet. Let cool for at least 10 minutes to crisp up further.
  7. Taste and sprinkle with extra salt, lemon zest, or your favorite spice blend if desired. Serve as a snack or salad topper.

Notes

For best crunch, pat chickpeas as dry as possible and avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket. Shake the basket every 5 minutes for even crisping. Add delicate spices or lemon zest after cooking to prevent burning. Store cooled chickpeas in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. Re-crisp in the air fryer for 2–3 minutes if needed.
