A quick and easy homemade flaky cream cheese Danish filled with smooth cream cheese and topped with tangy cherry preserves, perfect for breakfast or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
  • 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • 1/2 cup (160 g) cherry preserves
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, beat softened cream cheese with granulated sugar until smooth and creamy, about 2–3 minutes. Add vanilla extract and lemon zest, mixing just until combined.
  3. Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet into 4 equal squares, making 8 squares total.
  4. On each square, make a small indentation by pressing gently in the center. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of cream cheese filling into the center of each square, smoothing it slightly but keeping it inside the indentation.
  5. Place 1 teaspoon of cherry preserves directly on top of the cream cheese in each square.
  6. Fold two opposite corners of each square over the filling towards the center, slightly overlapping if you like, and gently press edges to seal.
  7. Lightly brush the edges and exposed pastry with the beaten egg to encourage golden browning.
  8. Transfer the assembled Danishes to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown.
  9. Remove from oven and transfer to a cooling rack for about 10 minutes. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Keep puff pastry cold but cream cheese softened for best texture. Avoid overfilling to prevent leaking. Use egg wash for a shiny golden crust. Tent with foil if edges brown too quickly. Can refrigerate assembled Danishes up to 24 hours before baking. Reheat leftovers in oven, avoid microwave to keep pastry crisp.
